What is spirometry?

Spirometry is the most frequently performed pulmonary function test (PFT) in Australia and New Zealand and is the cornerstone of lung function testing. It measures how well a person can move air in and out of their lungs and the capacity of their lungs.

Who is spirometry for?

  • Occupational-related lung disorders. Used to evaluate worker respiratory health in medical surveillance programs and to screen workers for their ability to perform certain tasks.
  • Pre-Surgery. Spirometry may be ordered before a planned surgery to check if your lung function is adequate for the rigors of an operation.
  • Existing conditions. If you’ve already been diagnosed with a chronic lung disorder, spirometry may be used periodically to check how well your medications are working and whether your breathing problems are under control.

What to expect

A spirometry test requires you to breathe into a tube attached to a machine called a spirometer (usually seated).

You are then required to take a deep breath and breathe out as hard as you can for several seconds into the tube.

The entire process usually takes less than 15 minutes.

When do I have a spirometry test?

Spirometry tests are performed as part of pre-employment medicals and are especially important for business and employees alike.

Evidence shows that investing in the health and safety of your employees can boost the health of your business. Building a team of healthy employees in a safe working environment can have a positive long-term impact on organisational success.

At Corporate Doctors Plus we extend our holistic, evidence-based approach to improve the health of your workers and reduce time lost due to injury. We can fit your workers in at short notice during the week, and on weekends if requested.
