Men’s Health Week (15–21 June 2026) is an opportunity to focus on the health and wellbeing of men and boys across Australia.
This year’s theme, “101 Reasons to See Your GP,” encourages men to take action when something doesn’t feel right rather than putting off seeking help. Research shows that two in three Australian men wait too long to seek medical advice when they notice changes in their physical or mental health.
At Family Doctors Plus, the GPs know that prioritising your health isn’t always easy, but regular check-ups and early intervention can make a significant difference to your long-term wellbeing.
Why Men’s Health Matters
Men are less likely to seek medical care, attend regular health checks, or discuss concerns about their physical and mental health. As a result, many health conditions are diagnosed later than they need to be.
The good news is that many common health issues can be prevented, managed, or treated more effectively when identified early.
Don’t Ignore Changes in Your Health
You don’t need a major health problem to book an appointment with your GP.
Some common reasons to see your doctor include:
- Feeling tired or lacking energy
- Changes in mood, stress, anxiety, or mental wellbeing
- Ongoing aches, pains, or injuries
- Concerns about weight, fitness, or nutrition
- Changes in bowel or bladder habits
- Sexual health concerns
- A changing mole or skin lesion
- Difficulty sleeping
If something has changed, it’s worth having it checked.
Important Health Checks for Men
Depending on your age, lifestyle, and family history, your GP may recommend:
- Heart health checks, including blood pressure and cholesterol testing
- Diabetes screening
- Bowel cancer screening
- Skin cancer checks
- Mental health assessments
- Prostate health discussions
- Regular eye and dental check-ups
These checks can help identify health concerns early, often before symptoms develop.
Small Steps Make a Big Difference
Looking after your health doesn’t have to be complicated. Staying active, eating well, getting enough sleep, limiting alcohol, avoiding smoking and vaping, and maintaining strong social connections can all contribute to better physical and mental health.
Make Your Health a Priority
This Men’s Health Week, take the opportunity to put your health first.
Whether it’s a routine check-up, a health concern you’ve been meaning to discuss, or simply a conversation about staying healthy, there are plenty of reasons to see your GP.
