Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains one of the leading causes of death and serious illness in Australia. The good news is that many heart-related conditions, such as heart attack and stroke, can often be prevented through early detection, lifestyle changes, and proper management.
Recently, the Heart Foundation released updated guidelines aimed at helping Australians reduce their risk of future heart events, particularly if they’ve already experienced one. In this blog, Dr Lowe, Family Doctors Plus GP, helps you understand what these new recommendations mean for you and how you can take simple steps to improve your heart health.
What is cardiovascular disease?
Cardiovascular disease refers to a group of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. These include:
- Heart attacks
- Strokes
- Angina
- Coronary artery disease
CVD can occur when blood vessels become narrowed or blocked due to a build-up of fatty deposits, a condition known as atherosclerosis. This can reduce blood flow to the heart or brain and lead to serious complications.
Who’s at risk?
Anyone can develop cardiovascular disease, but certain risk factors increase the likelihood, such as:
- High blood pressure or cholesterol
- Diabetes or pre-diabetes
- Smoking
- Being overweight or physically inactive
- A family history of heart disease
- High stress levels
Even if you feel well, you may still be at risk, which is why regular heart health checks with your GP are so important.
What’s new in the Guidelines?
The Heart Foundation now places even more emphasis on preventing repeat heart events in people who’ve already had a heart attack or been diagnosed with heart disease. Key points include:
- Regular heart health checks to monitor your risk factors
- Sticking with prescribed medications like statins or aspirin to help prevent further complications
- Staying on top of follow-up care—even if you’re feeling fine
- Healthy lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, improving diet, exercising regularly, and managing stress
Your GP will work with you to develop a care plan that’s tailored to your specific needs.
How can I protect my heart?
There are simple steps you can take to reduce your risk and support a healthy heart:
- Eat a balanced diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins
- Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days
- Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake
- Manage stress through mindfulness, exercise, or speaking with a counsellor
- Book regular check-ups with your GP, especially if you have risk factors or a family history of heart disease
