As we move into flu season, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself, your family, and our wider community. Influenza (commonly known as the flu) is more than just a bad cold, it can lead to serious illness, particularly for young children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions.
The Family Doctors Plus team is here to help you stay informed, protected, and supported throughout the season.
What is the Flu?
The flu is a highly contagious viral infection that affects the respiratory system (nose, throat, and lungs). It spreads easily through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and can also spread via contaminated surfaces.
Common Signs and Symptoms
Flu symptoms often come on suddenly and can include:
- Fever and chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or blocked nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue (feeling very tired)
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea (more common in children)
Symptoms can range from mild to severe and typically last around 1–2 weeks.
When Should You See a Doctor?
While many people recover from the flu with rest and fluids, medical care is important if symptoms worsen or if you are at higher risk of complications.
You should see a doctor if you or your child experience:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Persistent high fever
- Severe weakness or dizziness
- Dehydration (e.g. not drinking fluids, reduced urination)
- Symptoms that improve but then suddenly worsen
- Concerns for young children, elderly family members, or those with chronic conditions
If you’re unsure, it’s always best to seek medical advice early.
How is the Flu Prevented?
There are several simple steps you can take to reduce your risk of catching or spreading the flu:
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water
- Use hand sanitiser when washing isn’t possible
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
- Stay home if you are unwell
- Avoid close contact with others who are sick
- Keep up to date with your flu vaccination
The flu vaccine is the most effective way to protect yourself and others from influenza each year. Because flu viruses change, annual vaccination is recommended.
